I’m in Arusha, Tanzania right now. Arusha is a fairly big city, right at the base of the Serengeti National Park and Mt Kilimanjaro. I’m volunteering at the Umoja Centre and will be here at least until the end of the year.

The Centre provides free education (English, IT and Key Skills) to young disadvantaged Tanzanians. I love being here because I can see every day the results of what we are doing. I’m in the office, helping out with research, fundraising and writing government applications. I’m running a newspaper club and teaching the students how to put together their own newspaper, the Umoja Journalist.

I’m having a fantastic time here, and it’s a bit hard to imagine how different life is now compared with a year and a half ago. On the one-and-a-half year anniversary of the stroke, I was in the Serengeti National Park, on game drives, camping, and marvelling at how everything turned out.

And now, a lot of the hard work of last year with fundraising is continuing, and I’ve discovered that it’s a lot harder to do fundraising in Australia when you aren’t actually in Australia.

The gig was held at The Red Rattler, a fantastic little venue in Marrickville that’s essentially a community performance space. This is me towards the end of the night, feeling sleepy.

Sarah, one of the volunteer bar staff, wearing a National Stroke Foundation bib and spreading the message.

The crowd!

See that counter in my hand? It reads 200!

Maryanne, the first act of the night.

one66, who were on second.

2010, the third to take to the stage.

Oryus, the penultimate act.

The last band of the evening was Esta Banda Apesta, but unfortunately I don’t have any photos of them, as the photographer had to leave before their set. And speaking of the photographer, all of these photos were taken by Phil Rogers, who is now my favourite photographer in the world because he gave up his Friday night to volunteer at the gig and take almost 600 photos for me. Clicky for a lot more photos!

Last night was Notes of Stroke, and it was awesome. The bands were fantastic, there was a great crowd (at the highest, there were about 240 people there), everything went smoothly, and I ended up making about $1800 on door sales on the night. The final tally is pending, as there is some money from pre-sales that need to be donated.

I am so incredibly grateful to everyone who helped me with this, and there were a lot of people.

The lineup:

Maryanne, who performed an acoustic set including a Hanson song (A Minute Without You). Love!
one66, a two-man band that sounded like there were a lot more than just two guys.
2010, a band that hasn’t performed for five years, reminded me a bit of Evanescence, and were great
Oryus, whose guitarist Glen is wonderful and found hooked me up with two of the bands.
Esta Banda Apesta, who were a bit strange, a bit funky, and a lot fantastic.

The others:

I had four people volunteering their time working at the bar: Glen, Greg, Sarah and Rhys. You guys were wonderful, thank you for giving up your Friday night.

I had some people helping me on the door: Steph, for being the one I went to whenever I was about to freak out, and who always reminded me of the questions that needed to be asked. Tash, Lou and Amelia, for doing some stints of door throughout the night.

Phil, the lovely photographer who stayed for longer than he intended, for diving into the crowd and taking the photos that I never could have. I hope you enjoyed the night as much as I did.

And I could never have done this without the venue: The Red Rattler in Marrickville, who let me use the venue practically for free, and were incredible throughout. Thanks, Patsy, Penelope and Rodney!

Photos to come!

The Great Race was on today, and it turned out to be a lot of fun! There were a total of 16 participants (four teams of three and one team of four), and we spent the afternoon walking/running around the Rocks, Circular Quay and Darling harbour in Sydney. I saw parts of Sydney that I never even knew about, and it was a very fun day all around. It raised $410, wich I’m happy with, considering that about one week ago, there were about three participants who had definitely said yes.

Thank you so much to Josh and Brett from Great Race for running the whole thing, and most of all, a giant THANK YOU to everyone who came! I love you guys!

Article by Keeli Cambourne

Jen Li has learned that riding a bike is something you can forget.

At 23, the Sydney woman is spending her spare time pushing the pedals in deserted car parks just like she did as a little girl, getting back her balance on two wheels and building her confidence to take on a challenge she never thought she would have to face.

In June 2008 , Li was setting herself a goal for 2009 to be able to run 5km without stopping. By the end of that month her goal was just to sit up for five minutes unaided after suffering a stroke and finding herself unable to move her left side – or even remember about two weeks of her life.

Now Li is planning on cycling through Vietnam to raise awareness of stroke and to prove to herself that she is well on the way to “getting her life back”.

In November last year Li’s life was exactly what she wanted it to be. She had just started a new job as a researcher at the Urban Research Centre, University of Western Sydney was planning on moving in with her then boyfriend and was feeling invincible.

But after noticing a rash on her arms, and a few extra pounds she couldn’t seem to move, she was finally diagnosed with Cushings Disease caused by excessive cortisol in the body – a hormone usually released from stress. In Li’s case the disease was caused by a tumour on her pituitary gland which measured 8mmX6mm.
“I had pretty much every symptom of Cushing’s you can get,” Li says.

“My skin became weak and fragile, and I bruised very easily. Bright pink stretch marks appeared on my legs and across my tummy, my arms and legs lost a lot of muscle. I developed a very round, red face. I gained a lot of weight around my belly. I had a slight buffalo hump. My potassium levels were low. I would wake up with a sore back every morning, and I would get up in the middle of the night every night to pee.”

In November, 10 days after she had started her new job at UWSthe Urban Research Centre, Li took five days medical leave – enough she figured to have the simple surgery to remove the tumour and recover.

But that 10 days turned into more than three monthsone and a half months when days after the surgery she suffered a stroke.

“I had the surgery on Thursday, November 27 and on the Saturday the neurosurgeon came to check on me. I remember we talked about cricket and I happened to mention that I had water coming out of my nose. I didn’t know it then, but it was cerebrospinal fluid (the fluid surrounding the brain).

“My friends were planning on visiting me that day, and when the surgeon said I had to get a drain inserted at a different hospital I remember thinking ‘Now I have to text everyone and tell them not come’.”

Li was taken from Westmead Private Hospital to Westmead Public Hospital for a drain to be placed in her skull but says she only remembers having a bad headache – not any of the other classic symptoms of stroke.
“My boyfriend’s mother came to visit me and I felt really sick. I remember telling her that she had a new jacket on, because I thought I had to try and make everything seem as normal as possible.”

Later that afternoon her boyfriend came to see her and Li says it was him who realised something was seriously wrong.

“I apparently turned to him and asked where he was because I couldn’t see him,” she says. “The nurses took me down for a scan at around 6pm and then I woke up in the Intensive Care Unit of Westmead Public a couple of days later.”

Li couldn’t move the left side of her body for about 10 days and says she didn’t know she had actually had a stroke for two weeks after.

“I knew I had had a bleed but no-one used the word stroke. Before then the only thing I knew about stroke was that the grandmother of a character in one of the Babysitter Club books I used to read had one.
“When I was in ICU I remember looking at the date above the door and seeing December 12. It was the day I managed top sit up for about four minutes by myself, and I remember thinking that I had planned on being able to run 5km this year. I had to reset that goal. It was one of the days I did break down and cry and thought ‘this sucks’.

“I thought there is so much work to do to get my life back and I was wondering how I was ever going to be able to do it.”

Li says she suffered the ‘best kind of stroke’ you can have – a venous stroke, and combined with her young age, she says it helped her brain reestablish the majority of the networks it had lost.

But still, her recovery was not without its ups and downs, and it took one and a half months before Li was well enough to leave hospital and then return to work.

It was while she was recovering that she looked on the website for the National Stroke Foundation and saw a link to its Memorable Challenges that stroke survivors could do to help raise the public consciousness of the illness.

“I wasn’t looking to do something big, but I found the Vietnam cycle challenge,” she says.

The challenge is a 13-day trip from one end of Vietnam to the other, cycling through the heat and humidity of the Asian tropics, on roads that are often little more than pitted dirt tracks.

In June this year Li took a couple of friends to help her pick out a bike.

“They also went with me to see how easily I could pick it up again, and we spent two hours riding around the netball courts and car park at the end of my street,” she says.

“I learnt to turn, stop, follow a line, change gears, and I didn’t fall over. There is still a long way to go before Vietnam.”

Before she leaves Li has to raise $6500 to cover all her expenses and is busy organising a concert in October, a Stroke Awareness morning tea and a trivia night.

“I used to think I was shy but after more than six weeks in hospital, and having strangers see me naked every day, as well as have to wash me, feed me, and know every detail about my medical history, I’ve realised the worst thing people can say when I ask them to help is ‘no’,” she says.

“I’m not going to die by approaching strangers and asking them for donations or for help in organising these events. Some people say I’ve made a pretty amazing recovery but I say I really didn’t have much of a choice. I wanted to get my old life back, and I didn’t want to be a victim.

“Life is much bigger than that and before this I realised I had never really been tested before. Now I have.”
Li has set up a blog of her preparation for the Vietnam challenge at www.slight-hiccup.com.

The trivia fundraiser was on Monday night. After a slightly stressful day before, and a feeling of dread throughout the day, the evening ended up going quite well! The venue was set up perfectly, my lovely friend Samantha drove me and all the prizes there, and stayed on to help set up and collect money. Before we ended up at the pub (The Rose of Australia Hotel in Erskineville), we went on a scenic tour and saw Newtown and Macdonaldtown (Yes, shut up, we got lost. Just because I’m a geographer doesn’t mean I know my way around).

I had a few cancellations just before it started, but two unexpected extras, one of whom brought a gift voucher that ended up being third prize. In the end, 43 people came and $1529 was raised. I just want to say a massive “thankyou” to Reta from Trivia Magic for hosting, Rebecca from The Rose for letting me use the venue and for her help along the way, all the businesses who donated prizes for the silent auction, and everyone who came, especially my friends Suzie, Olga, Alison, Marita and Pat for poking and prodding and bringing more people than I otherwise would have had. Thank you guys! I love you all!

And now, some photos!

Me, as we were setting up the silent auction before guests arrived

One of the silent auction tables. Last year, I did my Honours thesis on independent bookshops in Sydney. I wrote them all letters earlier this year asking if they could donate books or vouchers for the cause, and this table is full of all the books that were donated. In addition to the books, I was also donated many dollars worth of vouchers (see my “thankyou” page for full list of businesses who donated). I love independent bookshops.

A room full of trivia, and Reta asking questions.

A table full of Googlers! Well, three Googlers, one other software engineer, and one IT support guy. This photo isn’t because I love them the most (though I do love them quite a lot!), it’s because it’s the best one of one team that isn’t blindingly bright or blurry.

Heads or tails, a common trivia game.

The team that came third.

The team that came second.

(Some of) the team that came first. Their team name was “Geogasm”, a term that I coined and heartily approve of!

Again, to everyone who came, THANK YOU. You are all awesome!

Yesterday, I was going to try not taking hydrocortisone. I lasted until lunchtime, and thought, “You know, some cortisol would be pretty good right now”. So took 2mg at lunch yesterday, and this morning I took 2mg at breakfast. I don’t think I’m ready to let go just yet. I’ll try again next weekend.

In other news, yesterday was also a mini-fundraiser that wasn’t organised by me. My friend Brad had offered to turn one of his wine and cheese evenings into a fundraiser for me. Thank you, Brad! A small group of our friends went to Brad’s last night, for food and drinking and games. I cooked a kangaroo stirfry, one of the guys who came brought an amazing fruit flan, I made chocolate chunk and pumpkin seed biscuits, and we played Pictionary.

The name of the evening was Quote for Stroke, and guests had to bring quotes that were inspirational or entertaining, and we shared them around the dinner table. These quotes were my contribution:

One way to get the most out of life is to look upon it as an adventure.
William Feather

The best way out is always through.
Robert Frost

Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall.
Confucius

Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

It was a lovely night, and I am now slightly freaking out about the Stroke of Genius trivia night tomorrow. You wouldn’t think that raising money would be this hard. I only need 650 people to give me ten bucks!

Another fundraiser I’m doing is a trivia night. It’s hosted by Reta from Trivia Magic, who hosts the Wednesday night trivia at the Marly I go to regularly. I have been spending the past month talking to businesses and stallholders getting items for the silent auction. There are some great prizes, and I’m looking forward to it. I need RSVPs for this one because the venue has limited capacity, and we need to know how to arrange the tables. Details, see below:
